Cambridge Police are now investigating after video surfaced of people burning an American flag.

On March 9, police responded to Highland Ave. for a report of suspicious activity.

According to a police report, the original complaint was for noise, but then the fire department was also dispatched due to a report of several people burning a flag.

Police said the suspects left the scene in white cars.

When officers arrived, the fire department had already put out the burning flag.

A witness told police she and her husband were sleeping when they were suddenly awoken by a group of people yelling and screaming in a rear parking lot. The woman said she went to her window and saw four people standing around a 2011 white Nissan Altima with a New York license plate. She said she then noticed a large American flag on the ground behind the vehicle.

She began to film the group with her cell phone.

According to the police report, the video captured four people: "a small, light-skinned female with her hair in a bun wearing a white T-shirt, dark colored sweatpants and Timberland boots; a small Asian female wearing a white sweater-vest with a patter, a dark colored T-shirt and dark colored shorts; a dark-skinned male in his twenties wearing a dark colored long sleeve jacket, a white undershirt, dark colored skinny jeans and shoes with pink laces; and another dark-skinned male in his twenties wearing a dark colored pants, a jean jacket and a pink T-shirt."

Police said one of the men held up the flag and then slammed it on the ground while the second man light a piece of paper on fire and then ignited the flag.

One of the women was also seen recording the incident.

Police said that "while it is disturbing to watch someone burn the Nation’s flag, that it is a protected form of free-speech."

Police are now searching for the suspects due to their "reckless behavior."

It is possible the flag was stolen from a local flagpole, but police said there are no reports of stolen flags at this time.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Cambridge police.
