PITTSTON, Penn. (WHDH) — A large statue of Christopher Columbus was toppled over in Pennsylvania when police said a woman crashed into it.

Police said the car hit the curb and drove over it, smashing into a fence and then the statue’s base. The statue came down on the car, smashing the rear window.

“A very large crash. Never thought it was that, though,” said resident Marie Griglock. “Never though it was that, though. He really hit it solid.”

Members of the town’s Italian American club. Leaders there said the statue was brought to Ohio in 1969 and they are in charge of taking care of it.

The statue is made of marble, which is why it did not smash to pieces. Once the fence is repaired, the club plans to put the statue back up.

No charges have been filed against the driver.
