SHARON, Mass. (WHDH) — A driver is safe after his car fell through the ice on Lake Massapoag in Sharon Wednesday night.

Police were notified of the car into the ice around 9 p.m. They said they are unsure why the driver was on the ice in the first place.

The driver, a male between 16 and 20 years old, was able to get about 100 yards from shore before he ran into trouble.

The young man was able to get out of the car before crews arrived.

Emergency responders were having trouble pulling the car to the shore.

"Obviously ice is not safe right now, especially for vehicles. The front end of the car went into the water. Luckily there were no injuries, everybody is okay,” said Chief James Wright, Sharon Fire Dept.

Officials say there is about three inches of ice on the lake; they say lakes aren’t safe for cars until there is at least six inches of ice.
