Ben Carson is now backing away from his claim that he saw American Muslims celebrating the 9/11 attacks.

Earlier Tuesday, in Nevada, Carson backed up the claim from fellow Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump that Muslims in New Jersey were seen on TV celebrating the attacks.

But a Carson spokesman now says Carson doesn’t believe he saw any Muslims in New Jersey celebrating. Instead, the former neurosurgeon is recalling video of people in the Middle East who were celebrating that day.

Trump, though, hasn’t backed down. He has repeatedly made the claim in recent days, despite strong pushback from local officials who say it didn’t happen.

Carson said while campaigning today that not only mosques — but also schools, supermarkets, car repair shops and "any place where radicalization is going on" — should be monitored in light of terrorist threats.
