Officials are now investigating after a Newport mansion caught on fire Thursday afternoon.

Flames were seen tearing through the home on Bellvue Avenue in the city’s historic district, near Salve Regina.

The $3.4 million mansion has stood for more than 100 years.

The fire broke out just before 5:30 p.m. Officials said high winds did not help firefighter battle the flames.

The mansion was built by a wealthy Philadelphia family. It was recently sold to a New York City family who had it under construction.

No one was home at the time.

"The whole place was engulfed, it’s just like, it went like that and this thing started collapsing," Jeff Desmond said. "I heard a couple of pops that were like small explosions from inside the house and you could hear the thing crack, and as soon as something cracked it fell over and it just went into the house. It wasn’t safe to get near it."

The cause of the fire is unknown.
