CHARLESTOWN, Mass. (WHDH) — One firefighter was taken to the hospital after a massive fire destroyed a multi-million dollar brownstone in Charlestown Thursday afternoon.
The fire started at the building on Bunker Hill Street. Smoke could be seen billowing into the sky.
Deb McCarthy, who lives half a block from the fire, said she could see firefighters on the roofs of buildings on both sides of the street. McCarthy said the high winds were keeping the fire burning.
Streets in the area were closed down. Embers from the fire then quickly sparked a second fire at an adjacent building. Firefighters said high winds, the intense heat and a congested infrastructure made the fire stubborn to extinguish. There was also concern about one of the buildings caving in.
Boston Fire says no residents were injured but one firefighter was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital with heat exhaustion.
One firefighter was injured and taken to Mass. General Hospital.
It is unclear how many residents were displaced but at least six families were living in one of the brownstones.
Officials said one building is a total loss and a second building suffered what could be a multi-million dollar loss.
At one point, a “mayday” was called when the fire escalated quickly and two firefighters were unaccounted for. Officials said they were found within minutes.
