CHELMSFORD, MASS. (WHDH) - Officials have begun an investigation into a police-involved shooting that happened in Chelmsford Saturday night.

A little after 8:30 p.m., a Tyngsborough police officer attempted to stop a suspect vehicle.  The officer followed the car down Route 3. The car left Route 3 near the Chelmsford line and entered the parking lot at Sully’s Ice Cream on Graniteville Road in Chelmsford.

When a Chelmsford sergeant approached the car, the suspect backed up and dragged the officer several yards.

According to police, fearing for the safety of  the Chelmsford officer, a Tyngsborough officer fired his service weapon and struck the suspect.

The suspect, a 27-year-old man from Tyngsborough, was taken by medical helicopter to a Boston-area hospital where he is in grave condition.

The Chelmsford officer suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken to a local-area hospital, where he was later released.

The Tyngsborough officer who discharged his weapon has been put on administrative leave following department policy.

The investigation is ongoing and being conducted by State Police, the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, Chelmsford Police Department and Tyngsborough Police Department.
