PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A Providence police officer is recovering at home after being injured during an exchange of gunfire in the city.

Police Chief Hugh Clements said on Saturday that officer Michael McGloin, a decorated member of the department’s violent crime task force, was likely saved by his bulletproof vest during the incident on Friday.

Clements says police body camera video shows the suspect, 19-year-old Tyree Robinson, shooting at McGloin and a second officer. The officers returned fire and Robinson, who was not injured, was later arrested at his home.

Robinson is being held on a number of charges including assault with intent to commit murder. It wasn’t immediately known if he had a lawyer.

Clements did not say what might have precipitated the gunfire.

McGloin was released after treatment at a hospital.
