LOWELL, Mass. (AP) — Two children who police say nearly drowned in a backyard pool during a birthday party at a home in Massachusetts are expected to survive.

First responders arrived at the home in Lowell around 8:20 p.m. Saturday following reports of the unresponsive swimmers. Two children, a preschool-aged boy and girl, were pulled from an above ground pool during the party.

A neighbor who is a registered nurse was able to revive the girl after providing breaths and chest compressions at the scene. Paramedics arrived as the man was about to begin resuscitation efforts on the boy.

Both children were flown to Boston-area hospitals in critical condition. Details regarding what happened prior to the incident remain unclear.
