BOSTON (WHDH) - Christmas in the City kicked off in Boston on Sunday.

The event gives gifts and brings fun to homeless families from around the area.

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh was joined by other local leaders.

The Christmas in the City organization held a holiday celebration for more than 5,000 homeless mothers and children.

Children were able to enjoy rides, Christmas crafts and a visit from Old Saint Nick.

The non-profit group gave out more than 10,000 gifts at the celebration.

The organization’s founders say the need for donations is bigger this year than ever before.

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh urged people to get in the holiday spirit and help those less fortunate.

Christmas in the City will be accepting donations through the week.

Toys can be dropped off at the Seaport Hotel. For more information on donating visit Christmas in the City’s website.
