Police officers in Canton had a close call on Thursday as they had to jump out of the way as a telephone pole came crashing down.

Officer Sean Goode and Canton Sergeant Paul DiGiampietro looked over the telephone pole and transformer that came crashing down too close for comfort.

"We heard the crack," Goode said. "I looked at our sergeant. We both just turned and just ran."

"You heard the crack," Digiampietro said. "You looked. It was like slow motion and then you just got out of the way."

The officers were on detail watching clean up after the overnight storm blew down huge trees in the neighborhood, bringing down power lines and two power poles.

Hours later, with the officers standing just feet away, a third power pole came down when workers removed a power line that was helping hold it up.

On closer inspection, the officers figured the pole was rotted out at the base, but whatever the case, the incident left them with a lesson learned for the next damage detail.

"It was terrifying, especially to be that close, to it," Goode said.

Repairs continue, as 10 homes remain without power.
