PROVINCETOWN, Mass. (AP) — The Coast Guard crew at Provincetown on Cape Cod has been doing more than keeping mariners safe. It also has been saving the service money.

The crew has won a military commendation for its efforts.

Awarded Friday, the Coast Guard meritorious unit commendation recognizes efforts by the crew from 2010 to 2012.

Military officials say the crew's accomplishments included saving about $40,000 as a result of energy usage changes and a local training initiative.

They say Provincetown crew members also teamed up with state and local police officials to do more than 100 recreational boating safety and fisheries patrols.
