A 9-year-old Colorado boy got to live his hoop dream in Colorado, getting the chance to play college basketball.
Carter Gates is one of those kids who always seems to have a smile on his face. The guys who play basketball at Colorado College will tell you he’s got a lot of spunk.
Team Impact connects college teams from all over the country with children in their community who have life threatening or chronic diseases.
The Tigers have completely embraced Carter, who is about half way through a grueling three year treatment regimen for leukemia.
When asked what the hardest part about his treatment was, Carter replied, “Just like not being able. Sometimes I have to be stuck in the hospital, which is not very fun.”
Carter had fans in the stands as he warmed up for the big game.
“He’s bringing us perspective, he’s bringing us a smile and he’s bringing us a new way to look at life, a better way to look at life,” said Captain James Lonergan.
Carter’s mom Kelly said all of this has been a blessing for her and her family.
“It’s given us something to do that has nothing to do with cancer. It’s just fun for everyone, which is something that we need,” she said.
During one game, the Tigers came back from 11 points down to win the game. Carter says the team calls him their good luck charm.
