WAKEFIELD, MASS. (WHDH) - A Commuter Rail train collided with a pickup truck Thursday in Wakefield.
The crash happened between Wakefield and Greenwood stations on the Haverhill Line at around 11:30 a.m. Officials said the train pushed the truck more than 100 feet down the tracks. The white pickup truck was crushed on the passenger’s side.
The MBTA said the railroad crossing warning system was working properly as the bells sounded and the gates came down. But surveillance video from a nearby business shows the pickup truck going through the gates. Bob Young, who was at the business and ran out to help after the crash, said the driver may have had a medical emergency.
The 76-year-old driver was airlifted to Massachusetts General Hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries. People on board the train were shaken by the crash but unhurt.
The MBTA said shuttle buses would provide alternate transportation for the train. The MBTA also said the crash should not affect Thursday’s evening commute.
