MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (AP) — A barge that was launching fireworks in Connecticut has caught fire during the middle of a community fireworks show.

The fire broke out at the annual Middletown fireworks show held Saturday, leading officials to cancel the grand finale.

Mayor Dan Drew says officials believe three dud fireworks shells exploded lower than normal and landed on the plastic tubing that held shells yet to ignite, causing it to catch fire.

Drew says firefighters waited to detonate every shell they could before moving in to extinguish the fire.

No injuries were reported.
