HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Police in Connecticut say a man brutally beat his 75-year-old mother, and told them he did it to make her stop talking.

Farmington Police say 53-year-old Richard Skenderian of Hartford called 911 Thursday night to report the assault. When officers arrived, they said they heard the mother groaning for help and found her with her face pummeled and almost unrecognizable. Police say Skenderian was covered with blood and there were large pools of blood in the house.

His public defender told the judge he has “significant mental health issues.”

Police say Skenderian told them his mother had abused him his whole life and “he finally had enough.”

The mother sustained a broken jaw, broken nose, broken ribs, punctured lung and fractured vertebrae.

A superior court judge set bail at $500,000.
