ANSONIA, Conn. (AP) — A 29-year-old Derby man faces weapons charges after allegedly firing a gun at a passing car before being shot by a police officer.

Corneilus Mccullough was being held Tuesday in lieu of $300,000 bond on charges including carrying a pistol without a permit and criminal possession of a firearm. No one else was injured in the shootings, police said.

On Monday around 7 a.m., two people approached the cruiser of a Derby Police Department officer in Ansonia near the town line and began banging on the officer’s windows asking for assistance, Derby Police Chief Jerry Narowski said.

The officer asked the people to step back onto the curb, which they did, but then one of them, later identified as Mccullough, pulled a gun and fired into a passing car, Narowski said.

In response, the officer, whose name has not been released, fired one shot, striking Mccullough in the leg, Narowski said. He said the driver of the passing car remained at the scene.

Mccullough was taken to Bridgeport Hospital for treatment before being transferred to the Bridgeport Correctional Center.

The second pedestrian, who Narowski described as a juvenile, was taken into custody. Police have not said whether he will face charges.

State police said they were still investigating the shooting and further charges are possible.

Police took a gun from the location of the shooting. Police said Mccullough is on the state’s Deadly Weapon Offender Registry, and does not have a valid pistol permit.
