MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut troopers have arrested nine people for driving under the influence and responded to 153 accidents so far over the Thanksgiving holiday, officials said Friday.
State police are focusing on impaired, aggressive and unsafe drivers during increased enforcement that began early Wednesday morning and continues through Sunday.
One of the accidents was fatal, killing two men whose SUV was going the wrong way on Interstate 95 in Clinton when it struck a tractor-trailer at about 2 a.m. Wednesday.
Troopers also issued 179 citations for various violations and responded to more than 100 motorist calls for assistance. State police responded to 2,862 calls for service in total.
During the same time last year, troopers charged 52 people with driving under the influence, issued more than 1,600 citations for speeding and other violations and investigated 593 accidents. Two people were killed in two separate crashes.
