ST. ALBANS, Vt. (AP) — An inmate assaulted a prison guard at the Northwest State Correctional Facility in St. Albans last week, the Vermont Corrections Department said Monday.

The correctional officer was taken the hospital and released with a concussion and bruises, officials said.

Other inmates immediately helped the officer and stopped the assault on Thursday, the Corrections Department said. The inmate has been transferred to another facility. The names of the officer and inmate are being withheld until an investigation is completed, officials said.

Vermont State Police will be investigating to determine if any criminal charges will be filed.

“Our correctional officers face grave risk every day. This event leaves me appreciating the work the staff does every day, the humanity of our inmates who ran to the aid of the officer and to the quick and compassionate response of the Vermont Department of Corrections (DOC) leadership team,” Corrections Commissioner Jim Baker said in a written statement.

He said he and staff are working to formally recognize the inmates who stopped the assault.
