BELCHERTOWN, Mass. (WHDH) — Crews used a helicopter Wednesday to remove a small plane that made an emergency landing in the Quabbin Reservoir.
The helicopter lifted the plane and flew away from the area with the plane hanging below it from a tether.
The 42-year-old pilot was flying from Rhode Island to Vermont when he said he made the landing on the sandbar Tuesday due to engine problems. Usually, planes are not allowed to land in the reservoir or even fly near it.
The reservoir supplies water to parts of eastern Massachusetts. State Police said the plane landing posed no environmental threat to the reservoir’s water supply.
The pilot was uninjured in the landing.
