WATERTOWN, MASS. (WHDH) - Emergency crews responded in Watertown Thursday afternoon after a fire broke out in a house on Maple Street.

SKY7-HD was over the scene, capturing video shortly before 4 p.m. of flames shooting out of the building’s roof and out the side of the structure.

Thick smoke could be seen still coming out of the roof as crews continued their response moments after 4 p.m.

Crews were able to get the fire under control. The flames then reignited, though, and destroyed much of the house’s third floor.

Officials said the six people who lived at the home were all able to get out of the building safely after a nearby mail carrier alerted the residents.

Watertown police asked community members to avoid the area around the fire in an initial statement Thursday afternoon, warning traffic would be impacted by the fire response.

In an update around 8 p.m., police said the fire had been extinguished and the area had reopened.
