LYNN, MASS. (WHDH) - A water main break in Lynn has left a stretch of road underwater.

Crews responded around 1 p.m. Monday to the break on South Common Street after witnesses reported seeing water bubbling up through the pavement near St. Mary Church.

The water then flowed down a driveway to a nearby apartment building leaving residents worried about the prospect of flooding.

“One of the residents, she went to try and clear the drain, there is a lot of leaves and trash in there, and the water tried to go down the drain and not in the garage and that was really helpful for the cars,” Tawonia Queeley said.

The road has been temporarily blocked though one driver did decide to disregard the cones and a line of traffic soon followed.

“Right around the cones, yea, why not? Until one of them goes down in a hole” Lenny Melanson recalled.

After just a few minutes, cracks appeared in the street as the rushing water eroded the earth beneath the pavement.

A city water official said the mains are about a hundred years old and the toughest part of the job today will be locating the correct spot to shut the water down to the area.

Crews checked a map but in the end it all came down to trial and error.

No additional information was immediately available.
