BOSTON (AP) — Critics of a ballot question that would ban the sale of eggs and other food products in Massachusetts that come from farms where animals are confined to overly restrictive cages have organized a formal committee to oppose the measure.

Citizens Against Food Tax Injustice argues Question 3 will drive up food prices and unfairly burden low-income families.

The group is composed of several organizations, including the Massachusetts Farm Bureau, the New England Brown Egg Council, the National Pork Producers Council and the Retailers Association of Massachusetts.

Citizens for Farm Animal Protection is supporting the question. The group’s single biggest source of funding comes from the Maryland-based Humane Society of the United States, which has contributed about $1.5 million.

Polls have shown support for the question among Massachusetts voters.
