Thousands of passengers were left stranded on the island of St. Thomas after a fire broke out on their cruise ship.

Passenger Sharifa Abubaker said she and her friends saw smoke coming from the ship after they disembarked. She also reported hearing strange noises on the ship just before it arrived on St. Thomas.

Carnival confirmed that a fire started in the cruise ship’s engine room. As crews examined the damage, the captain deemed the ship unsafe to sail, leaving 3,300 passengers stuck on the island. Abubaker said that they have no idea on when the ship will leave the island.

"They haven’t said anything about the ship leaving the port," said Abubaker. "And this is the first stop in the seven day cruise. So I have no idea what’s happening afterwards."Passengers spent the whole day stuck outside with no access to their luggage. Hours later, passengers were given the all clear and are using the cruise ship as a hotel until the inspection of the engine room is done.
