Normally, I might say "Here we go…" but tonight it’s more like, "Here we ARE." The arctic cold has been oozing in throughout the day, taking air temps from the 20s into the single-digits. It doesn’t stop there, either. We’re in for those temps to keep on dropping throughout the night – and the wind will add insult to injury. It’s a very good likelihood that we set records with this cold air tomorrow (see below), but who cares about air temps when "real feel" temps are somewhere between -25 to -35°?! This is DANGEROUSLY cold, folks. Not a good time to be taking that long run in preparation for Boston 2016!
A Wind Chill Warning is in effect for much of the Bay State through Sunday at Noon. With wind chill readings as low as -35°, frostbite can set in in a matter of minutes. Remember, "wind chill" is all about exposed skin. We have a layer of heat that hovers just above our skin – and if that layer of heat is exposed, the wind will blow it away. It’s a little big like our bodies are providing us a "wet suit" of sorts – but it doesn’t do you any good if you have winds in the mix. Put on the layers, the gloves, the hats, the scarves – whatever you got – if you must be outside. If you don’t need to go out, just don’t. Enjoy a candlelit date night dinner in this weekend. Your significant other (and probably your wallet) will thank you. :c)
There is a slight chance that the outer Cape and islands could pick up a little snow overnight tonight. A coating to 2" is possible in isolated locations due to ocean effect snow. The wind direction isn’t ideal for OES (ocean effect snow), but it is such COLD and DRY wind that it could kick up some bands. For a more detailed explanation of this, see Rob Eicher’s blog from earlier this morning. He’s a smart dude.
We’ll have sunshine for Sunday – appropriately. However, it’s one of those "cat on a windowsill days," as I like to call them; it looks GREAT from inside… but once you’re out, you want back in (just like a cat). Air temps will rise to around 10° for highs tomorrow (OUCH), but the winds will become much less feisty tomorrow afternoon. Wind Chill Warnings and Advisories set to expire at Noon.
Monday is still fairly cold – but temps are starting on the up and up. The afternoon will be in the mid to upper 20s, and then we keep climbing as we move into the late evening. However, this is the same time frame as the arrival of our next storm system. For now, it looks like the onset of this storm will run into some of this lingering cold air, which would mean SNOW… but then by midnight Tuesday, we’re talking ALL RAIN and WIND. Could be an inch or two of snow late Monday – maybe even some sleet and freezing rain – and then ALL rain as temps climb into the 50s for Tuesday. More on all of this after we move through this bitter weekend.
Stay warm. – Breezy
