Dartmouth Police are now investigating a police-involved shooting.

Around 4 p.m. Sunday, Dartmouth Police were called to Dartmouth Street for a report of a domestic violence incident between a;mother and her son, identified as 23-year-old Ryan Kuphal.

While police were on their way to the home, Kuphal drove away in his mother’s vehicle, police said. Officers eventually located Kuphal a short time later outside a home on Bush Street in South Dartmouth.

According to a preliminary investigation,Kuphal allegedly charged at officer while armed with a knife.

Police said a non-lethal taser was deployed by an officer, but the taser was not successful in disabling Kuphal. After continuing to charge at the officers, one officer fired his weapon and struck Kuphal once.

Kuphal was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital where he is in serious but stable condition.

The incident is now under investigation.
