David Sweat, who escaped a New York prison with Richard Matt, is telling investigators he was the “driving force” behind the breakout plan.
Sweat apparently cut a hole in the back of his cell and crawled through it late at night to search the pipe and tunnel system for an escape route.
At night, Sweat said, he would return to his cell before the 5:30 a.m. prisoner count.
Sweat is now being housed in a special unit 23 hours each day.
