BOSTON (WHDH) — Meryl Davis and Charlie White have taken first place in the senior ice dance category at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships.
This is the sixth time that the pair has taken the championship title, setting a new record and scoring every possible point in their category.
Officials believe that the two could give the U.S. its first ever Olympic gold in ice-dancing.
“I think coming into this competition it is no secret that we were going after that sixth title. The sixth record-breaking title. It is such an honor for us,” said Davis.
With Davis' shaggy, blonde mop of hair whirling around the ice and White's tied back by a tiara, the world champions gave an energetic and emotional routine to "Sheherazade" by the Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. They finished with 200.19 points — their most ever at nationals — thanks to a 119.50 that was a perfect score for the elements in their free skate.
"With the Olympics in the season, it really ups the ante. What a great time to be an American ice dancer," said White.
7News’ Nancy Chen was looking also at the Shibutani siblings, whose parents met at Harvard University. The two came in third. Earlier, the two won the pairs championship.
