SOUTH BOSTON, Mass. (WHDH) — Whitey Bulger’s defense team said their client isn’t disappointed with the outcome of the trial.
“Jim Bulger was very pleased with how the trial went and ever pleased with the outcome,” said Defense Attorney, J.W. Carney. “This trial has never been about Jim Bulger being set free and coming out of this courthouse.”
Instead, Bulger’s lawyers, J.W. Carney and Hank Brennan, said the 83-year-old mobster believed the parade of witnesses, criminals who cut deals with the prosecution to testify against him, proved his point that the government was corrupt.
“Hopefully this case is the beginning where people reflect a little about our government [and] ask questions about what happened and why and look into why it’s still going on today,” said Defense Attorney, Hank Brennan.
But Bulger decided not to take the stand during the trial and tell his side of the story, because the judge shot down Bulger’s immunity defense.
“Had that ruling been different, this trial may still be going because he had a lot to say,” said Carney.
Bulger plans to appeal and then possibly testify, but he has given up on ever being a free man.
“Mr. Bulger knew as soon as he was arrested that he was going to die behind the walls of a prison or on a gurney being injected with a chemical that would kill him,” said Carney.
Bulger’s defense team said the jury was very diligent and they did a good job.
