Downpours hit hard and often this afternoon. From Central Mass. to Eastern Mass. the line marched east along the Pike and hammered us with rain and
wind.

Then a swift moving jet stream gave the rain a kick, and the downpours shot offshore. Just enough to give us a glimpse of the setting sun and a few vivid rainbows.

(thanks to @kowalmichael)

Now lingering showers will dot the landscape for the remainder of the night. One exception: the Cape/Islands, which will see the downpours up until 10-11pm. Rainfall totals were impressive across Central Mass. as nearly 3″ fell in places like Barre and just over 2″ in Shrewsbury.

Drier air is in route for the remainder of the night. Still a few scattered showers through the wee hours, then some clearing toward morning. Less humid air takes over on Friday, but the air remains mild. Therefore, my conclusion is another day in the 70s. Plain and simple.

Expect a major cool down for the weekend. The big drop comes by the end of Saturday with the passage of a sharp cool front. Plan on turning the heat on and keeping it on through Sunday…and much of next week.

Let me expand on that. A major, slow-moving storm system is expected to park itself off Nantucket by Tuesday night, sealing our fate with rain and a raw east/northeast wind. There is great agreement in the weather models on this, so confidence is running rather high. This will not only banish the drought, but also any thoughts of wearing shorts/t-shirts for a while.

Enjoy your Friday and goooooooooooo Pats!

Pete
