DERRY, N.H. (WHDH) - A man was taken to the hospital with severe burns due to a medical oxygen explosion in Derry, according to the Derry Fire Department.

Fire crews responded to a report of an explosion at Island Pond Road shortly before 1:00 p.m.

According to the Derry Fire Department, a man suffered severe burns to the face and chest, and was taken to Parkland Medical Center. The man was later airlifted to a Boston hospital.

The fire caused charring on the floor of the living room, and it was extinguished by a family member before the fire department arrived.

Preliminary investigations showed the fire was caused by the use of smoking materials while self-administering home medical oxygen.
