BOSTON (WHDH) — The “Spelling Bee Bandit,” a suspect who committed four bank robberies at TD Bank branches in Reading, Andover and Peabody, and a Salem Five bank in Burlington, has been arrested.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Massachuestts District Attorney’s Office announced that Jason S. Englen, 34 of Chelsea, was arrested and charged.
The bandit was on the state’s “Most Wanted” list for four similar bank robberies that occurred in early November. The D.A.’s statement said law enforcement received tips after the man’s image was circulated on bulletins and public websites.
The suspect gained his nickname because in each robbery, he handed the teller a note with the word “ROBERY” or “ROBERT” demanding cash.
The D.A. says if Englen is found guilty, he will face up to at least 20 years in prison as well as a $250,000 fine and restitution, though “acutal sentences for federal crimes are typically less than the maximum penalties.”
