STOW, MASS. (WHDH) - A dog rescued after he was forced to chew off his own foot in order to save his life is now recovering in the care of a new family.
The 2-year-old German Shepherd, named Maverick, was rescued back in July from his previous home in Middleboro. Police said Maverick chewed off part of his foot to break free of a line that kept him tied up outside.
Maverick’s previous owner was arrested and charged with animal cruelty. More than 1,000 people applied to adopt Maverick and Mark and Tracy Douglas were chosen. Mark said they were inspired to adopt Maverick after hearing what happened to him.
“It tugged at my heartstrings to know that a dog could be in a situation that horrific,” said Mark.
