Dozens of dogs and cats were rescued from a home in New Jersey after officials said they were living in deplorable conditions.

More than 50 dogs and cats are now receiving a lot of love.

Police said it was a case of animal hoarding.

Rescuer Lorraine Healey suspected some of the dogs had never been outside the New Jersey home.

Carol Del Forno was one of the many neighbors who complained about conditions at the house, such as the noise and the smell.

"The sound is chilling when they are bark at once, the sound is chilling," she said.

Rescuers wore face masks and some even put a dab of menthol compound under their nose to mask the smell.

Five cats were rescued alive. Another 11 were found dead inside the home.

According to investigators, the tenant, Juan Perez, will face numerous charges for mistreating animals.
