MARION, Mass. (WHDH) — A Wareham driver was held on $5,000 cash bail after hitting a woman in Marion and fleeing the scene.

Police said a woman, 40, and her dogs were struck while walking down the street in Marion Sunday afternoon. The car hit the two dogs first, killing one of them.

The woman was taken to the hospital by helicopter with serious injuries.

Prosecutors said the driver, 22-year-old David Pajunen, admitted to fleeing the scene after panicking.

“He expressed his concern for that female. He apologized for leaving the scene. He stated that he panicked and did not know what to do. He stated that it happened so fast he had nowhere to go. He just panicked and took off,” said Prosecutor Greg Nobel.

There is no word on the victim’s condition.
