WOBURN, MASS. (WHDH) - A driver was hospitalized after she narrowly avoided getting impaled with a pole in Woburn.

Stephen Sawyer said his wife Luz lost control of her car around the corner from their home and crashed into a fence. The pole from the fence broke through the windshield, narrowly missing her face by just a few inches.

Stephen Sawyer Jr. said his mother had been at the supermarket and was on her way home. When she did not return, he went looking for her and found the crash scene.

“The first thing I saw was the pole through the car and I almost freaked out,” said Stephen Sawyer Jr. “That made everything inside of me drop and I almost freaked out there but I’m just happy my mother’s OK.”

Luz Sawyer remains hospitalized for observation. Her husband believes she suffered a medical episode.
