BARNSTABLE, Mass. (AP) — A Cape Cod judge has found a motorist not guilty in a teenager's death after a fatal crash on New Year's Day in 2010.

The Cape Cod Times reports Andrea Mastandrea was acquitted Wednesday of leaving the scene of an accident causing death, and negligent motor vehicle homicide.

The 31-year-old admitted her car hit and killed 17-year-old Andrew Dexter II in Bourne, but said she didn't know it at the time and left the scene after hearing a "thud."

Dexter had been walking home from a party after drinking.

The Barnstable Superior Court judge said a recent Supreme Judicial Court ruling guided his verdict.

It says a motorist has to know he or she hit someone to be guilty of leaving an accident scene after causing death.

Dexter's family said there's been no justice.
