As efforts to remove snow continued throughout Friday, officials asked drivers to steer clear.
Massachusetts officials asked people to stay off the roads to allow snow-clearing equipment to do their jobs.
The state Transportation Department said it had deployed more than 2,100 pieces of snow-clearing and road-treating equipment.
What started off as rain this morning quickly turned to sticky, heavy snow.
According to Eversource, there were 39,000 customers without power in eastern Massachusetts as of 11 p.m. on Friday. National Grid reported 47,000 customers without power as of 11 p.m. on Friday.
Many school districts the region closed for the day, including in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island.
