There was drone drama at the US Open in New York Thursday night after a recreational drone made its way up and over the stadium walls and into the stands below.
The scare caused a delay during one of the tennis matches.
An arrest has now been made.
A New York City teacher is under arrest after the drone he was allegedly operating crashed into the stands.
According to police, 26-year-old Daniel Verley was charged with reckless operation of a drone and operating a drone in a New York City park outside the prescribed area.
Toward the end of a second-round match between No. 26 Flavia Pennetta of Italy and Monica Niculescu of Romania.
The drone flew over the court before crashing into an unoccupied area of seats.
A shaken Pennetta told the Associated Press that with everything going on in the world, “I thought, ‘Okay, it’s over.’ That’s how things happen.”
Police, along with stadium security, stopped the match to investigate the device.
There were no injuries.
The incident comes nearly a month after the pilots of four commercial airplanes reported seeing a drone during their final approach at Newark Airport.
This is not the first time a drone has flown over the US Open.
Last year, a filmmaker was arrested for allegedly flying a drone outside the National Tennis Center.
According to police, the man told officers he thought he was flying the drone in an appropriate park space.
As for the match, Penetta went on to win in straight sets.
