BOSTON (WHDH) — Twenty-six miles makes a marathon and for most that's an incredible feat.
But for two men, on the road to Boston, they're attempting an amazing journey all to show their long distance dedication for the victims of the marathon bombing.
"By far the most distance I've ever run,” said Frank Fumich.
It started with the will to run for a cause.
"We realized it could be us there, just as much as it could be the families that were affected,” said Matt Nelson.
These men from Maryland, Virginia and Florida, ran double and triple marathons to raise money for the families of Martin Richard who was killed in the Boston bombings and Jeff Bauman who lost both legs.
The plan is to personally run the money to the victim's families.
"90-percent is mental and the other 10-percent is mental – so part of it is in your mind and the other part, you've got to be out of your mind,” said Nelson of the run.
As ultra runners, the guys are used to running upwards of 50-kilometers at a time, but this is extreme. The distance between DC to Boston is roughly 450 miles.
"We're looking at having each done 10 to 12 marathons by the time this is all over,” said Nelson.
Showers, sleep and food – all in an RV.
"So this is our home for about 5 days,” said Fumich.
If all goes according to plan, the men should wrap up their trip Saturday at noon and they plan to run the final 26.2 miles together right to the Boylston Street finish line.
