NEWTON, MASS. (WHDH) - Police and fire crews in Newton were called to a Haz-Mat response on Thursday morning.

Officials say they were called to Walnut Street for a reported incident at a Bank of America branch.

The street was closed down traveling in both directions from Washington to Madison as a result of the incident, and people were asked to avoid the area.

Police say Walnut Street is now open to the public again.

Haz-Mat crews entered the bank to investigate shortly before 11 a.m.

Officials say ATM batteries overheated, causing a hazardous situation.

Police say there is no danger to the public.
