NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) — An empty kayak found adrift off the coast of North Kingstown prompted a search for a person possibly in the water and a plea by the Coast Guard for paddlers to put their names and phone numbers on their vessels.
A person who spotted the empty kayak used VHF radio to contact the Coast Guard Thursday morning. There was no contact information on the kayak.
A Coast Guard crew aboard a 45-foot response boat and members of the Narragansett Bay Marine Task Force searched the waters from Quonset Point to the Jamestown Bridge for a person possibly in the water but didn’t find anything. The search has been suspended due to a lack of information.
The Coast Guard is urging paddle craft owners to put identifying information on their vessels.
