A car crashed into a telephone pole in Beverly early Saturday, leaving the passenger dead and the driver seriously injured.

The crash happened on Hale Street in front of Endicott College at around 12:15 a.m. Saturday.

Endicott College identified the passenger as 19-year-old Craig Sampson of Williston, Vermont, and said he was a sophomore at the school.

The college released the following statement:

His loss is having a profound impact on his friends and family. He brought life, energy and smiles to all our faces and will be greatly missed by our entire community. At this time of sadness we must join together in our prayers and for Craig and his family. Gully’s is open all day today with counselors present. Beechwood will be open from 8-12 tonight to provide a space for students to come together in grief; food will be provided. Please keep the Sampson family in your thoughts and prayers.

The 20-year-old driver was identified as Joseph Castano of Williston, Vermont. He was taken from Beverly Hospital to Lahey Hospital Burlington with serious injuries. Police said alcohol and speed may have been a factor in the crash. 

Beverly and State Police continue to investigate.
