Energy company Eversource and the Better Business Bureau are warning Massachusetts residents to be aware of scams this winter season.

In scamming situations, scammers often sound legitimate and convincing and threaten to shut off electric service immediately unless instant payment is made by a prepaid debit card.

Information to help avoid becoming a victim:

  • Eversource representatives do not demand instant payment over the phone and don’t require the use of prepaid debit cards
  • Customers are advised never to provide personal financial or account information to any unsolicited person over the phone at the door or online
  • Customers who are scheduled for disconnection due to non-payment will receive written notice that includes information on how to keep their service
