PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island State Police say they found drug paraphernalia inside a pickup truck driven by a man who was shot to death by officers on a busy interstate.

Police were seeking evidence that might explain why 32-year-old Joseph Santos fled from police on Nov. 9.

State police and Providence officers fired more than 40 rounds at Santos following a high-speed chase on Interstate 95. Santos was killed and a passenger was injured.

Police believe they were “involved in criminal activity.” Investigators also found a TV, a GPS and three cellphones in the truck.

Police say Santos got caught in traffic and rammed other cars before he was shot.

The chase came as police were looking for a different man who had stolen a state police cruiser.
