A former Weymouth Bank executive was arraigned Monday on charges he embezzled thousands of dollars from his niece and nephew.
Police said William Harnett stole the money from accounts set up for the children after their parents were killed in a car crash in 2009. Harnett was the bank’s vice president of retail investments when he became the children’s guardian.
Weymouth Bank officials said they contacted police after noticing unusual activity on the account, which led to a grand jury investigation. According to police reports, Harnett admitted to withdrawing money from the accounts to pay for drugs.
