MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) — People jumped from their balconies and at least one family tossed a baby to a teen who caught the child, as fire swept through an apartment complex near the South Carolina coast.
The Thursday night blaze injured at least seven people and destroyed the homes of 16.
All three floors and the building’s attic were on fire when firefighters reached the Windsor Green complex near Myrtle Beach. Mark Nugent of Horry County Fire Rescue said most of the injuries involved people who jumped from their balconies.
One baby was rescued when the child was tossed to 16-year-old Blake Cannon. He told The Myrtle Beach Sun News , “I told them I’d catch it and he dropped it down and I caught it.”
Nugent said firefighters rescued one person inside the building.
