FARMINGTON, Maine (AP) — The town of Farmington has come up with a way to save money in a time of tight municipal budgets.
Instead of buying a new fire truck, firefighters and public works employees built the vehicle themselves.
Chief Terry Bell says many volunteer firefighters have day jobs with the skills required to build a truck from the ground up.
Lt. Tim Hardy tells the Morning Sentinel the truck cost around $95,000 to build. Buying a new truck could cost as much as $135,000.
The new truck replaces 25-year-old vehicle.
The project got under way last fall when the town authorized the fire department to buy the chassis and the body.
