ACUSHNET, Mass. (WHDH) — A father and his son were found dead in their Acushnet home Wednesday and officials said they died from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Police said a faulty furnace caused high levels of carbon monoxide in the home on Buttonwood Lane. The home did not have carbon monoxide detectors.

The victims were identified as Joseph Lopes, 41, and Collin Lopes, 9. Officials said there is no evidence of foul play.

Acushnet Police said they received a call from Collin’s mother, who is also the ex-wife of Joseph Lopes. She told police she had been unable to reach the pair. Police found the victims during a well-being check Wednesday morning after being notified that Collin had not shown up for school.

“It happened last night while they were sleeping, tragic…unbelievable, I still can’t believe it,” said relative Tim Sousa, who described 9-year-old Collin as a “great kid.”

Officials said two dogs were also in the home; one of them had died, and the other appeared to be ill.

The Acushnet Fire Department urged residents to make sure they have working carbon monoxide detectors in their homes.
