The FBI and IRS are conducting an investigation at the Canton law office of Massachusetts State Sen. Brian Joyce.
According to the FBI, the agencies are conducting "court authorized activity in connection with an ongoing federal investigation."
The FBI provided no further comment.
Political watchdog group Common Cause told 7News that there have been ethics issues and allegations surrounding Joyce, a Democrat, before. In January, Joyce agreed to pay nearly $5,000 for using campaign funds to pay for his son’s high school graduation party back in 2014.
Joyce remedied the issues by making a $5,000 contribution to a charity or reimbursing the money, according to Common Cause.
Wednesday afternoon, Joyce’s attorney released a statement:
“It is unfortunate that recent stories in the media appear to have sparked an investigation. Senator Joyce has been cooperating with each inquiry that has taken place to date resulting from those stories and believes that he has done absolutely nothing wrong.” – Howard M. Cooper, Senator Brian Joyce’s attorney.
The Massachusetts GOP has called on Joyce to resign, accusing of having no regard for the law. Gov. Charlie Baker also commented on the investigation Wednesday, calling the allegations "troubling."
Joyce has been an elected official for two decades and has been a state senator since 1998.
